POSITION SUMMARY
The Field Service/SCBA Technician (FSST1) is responsible for flow-testing/repair MSA SCBAs and Basic Bauer compressor preventative maintenance (PM) procedures.  The FSST1 will travel to customer locations and provide onsite maintenance of Bauer compressors and flow testing and repairs of MSA SCBA equipment. The FSST1 will also provide in-house SCBA repair and flow testing. The Field Service/SCBA Technician reports directly to the Service Supervisor.

JOB FUNCTIONS
Include the following, but other duties may be assigned.

  • Keep accurate records of work hours and parts utilized, and work performed for each service call.
  • Perform MSA SCBA Flow testing.
  • Perform MSA SCBA repairs and evaluations.
  • Perform fit testing for Fire Department personnel.
  • Maintain proper repair standards
  • Maintain MSA SCBA parts inventory
  • Perform Air Testing on compressor systems.
  • Assist BSF technicians with installations and equipment delivery.
  • Begin learning to perform Basic Preventative Maintenance on Bauer compressors to serve as a backup as needed.
  • Begin learning to perform CO Monitor calibration procedures on compressors and serve as a backup as needed.
  • Complete technical product reports: reports on product problems encountered.
  • Respond to other requests from management on a timely basis.
  • Travel offsite to customers to perform maintenance of Bauer’s equipment to ensure top produce performance.
  • Regular, reliable, and on time attendance.

 ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Two (2) years (2) minimum technical experience related and/or training for mechanical and/or electrical equipment; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong mechanical background combined with electronics and knowledge of pneumatics.
  • Ability to respond to customer (internal and external) needs in a timely manner.
  • Proficient organization and planning skills.
  • Must be self-starter and able to work under minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve issues and research solutions.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of computers, especially Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.  Knowledge of proper phone and email etiquette for communications with customers.
  • Valid driver’s license with a positive driving record.
  • Forklift certified or familiar with forklift operation.
  • Must be capable of traveling domestically up to 75% of the time.
  • Valid US Passport or ability to obtain a passport within a year of employment.
  • Must pass background check for access to military bases and CDCR fire departments.

 VALUED BUT NOT REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or other related field of study.
  • Technical or vocational training or certification.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing industry.

Normal working schedule: Monday through Friday with overtime required at times.  Core business hours are from 8am to 5pm.  The noise levels in some manufacturing facilities frequently may exceed the normal dBA. The employee is required to wear eye and shoe protection when walking through the plant.  Hearing protection may be required in some areas.

Description
Under the direct supervision of the Shop Supervisor, the Fire Mechanic performs various skilled duties by performing minor and major repairs and maintaining all Fire Apparatuses, including utility, individual staff vehicles, and all departmental equipment. This includes but is not limited to, a complete range of preventative maintenance, and diagnosis of diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles and equipment, with the ability to adjust as required.

About the Role
This is a journey-level classification. An employee in this class performs skilled tasks in the mechanical repair and maintenance of diesel and gas-powered apparatus, vehicles, hydraulic systems for aerial ladders, and other like equipment. Assignments are received in the form of oral or written communications. The employee is expected to determine the nature and extent of needed repairs, prioritize them, and perform necessary repairs.

Essential Duties
INSPECTS: All department vehicles to ensure they meet proper safety protocols and are in standard working order.
SERVICE AND MAINTAIN: All District vehicles including but not limited to, fire engines, ambulances, utility trucks, trailers, aerial ladder truck, and passenger vehicles to ensure proper working order all while providing for the safety of the employee. Perform regular servicing and preventative maintenance on all District vehicles and apparatus performing tune-ups, lube, oil, filter, and chassis lubrication. The Fire Mechanic will also diagnose, service, maintain, and repair such things as; fire pumps, relief valves, and other control or plumbing equipment (proper certification required).
INSPECT, DIAGNOSE, AND REPAIR: All District vehicles including but not limited to, fire engines, ambulances, aerial ladder truck, passenger vehicles, utility trucks, trailers, power train components, transmissions, transfer cases, differentials, hydraulic and pneumatic brake systems with any related components, steering and suspension systems with any related components, and electrical circuits.
INSPECT, DIAGNOSE, REPAIR, AND INSTALL: Complex electrical systems, installation of emergency lighting, sirens, and communication equipment.
OPERATE: All shop equipment and machine tools safely and efficiently.
