POSITION DESCRIPTION
The General Services Department is offering an exciting career opportunity for experienced Fire Equipment Mechanics. Fire Equipment Mechanic I is the entry level class in the Fire Equipment Mechanic series. This class differs from Fire Equipment Mechanic II in that the latter is the journey level class in which incumbents are expected to independently diagnose and complete maintenance and repair assignments with minimal supervision.
Fire Equipment Mechanic I, under close supervision, maintains and repairs Fire Department heavy equipment, apparatus, and related fire-fighting equipment. Incumbents perform maintenance and minor repairs, applying previously acquired mechanical skills while learning the special skills required in maintaining and repairing fire apparatus and related equipment. Duties include but are not limited to: maintaining and repairing all Fire Department equipment and apparatus including engines, trucks, air brake systems and ladders; designing and constructing component parts and units necessary to the operation of equipment and apparatus; rebuilding parts, such as fire pumps, valves, transmission mounts, brackets and clamps; and performing simple fabrication tasks using lathes, shapers, drill presses, and welding equipment. The ideal applicant should possess the interest, drive and ability to operate efficiently within a fast-paced environment. Incumbents may be required to work any shift and may be required to work on-call during holidays, weekends and nights as assigned.

Heavy Equipment Mechanics maintain, repair, devise modifications for and overhaul a variety of large trucks, heavy construction, and related equipment (John Deere, Detroit/Mercedes, Caterpillar, Ford, Freightliner, GMC, etc.).
As a condition of employment, new hires must, within six months, obtain an unrestricted Class A California driver’s license with endorsements for air brakes, hazardous material and tanker and have a satisfactory driving record.
Typical duties include:
• Repairing, modifying, and overhauling reduction gears, hydraulic systems, braking systems, steering systems, cooling systems, electrical systems, air conditioning systems and similar units.
• Reading and interpreting mechanical drawings, specifications, and shop manuals.
• Performing preventive maintenance and inspections on heavy trucks and heavy construction equipment; making emergency repairs in the field; recommending shutdown of equipment that appears unsafe.
• Conferring with equipment operators to determine operational problems; recommending operational methods to minimize breakdowns and repairs.
• Entering data into the computerized equipment maintenance system and making verbal and written reports of work performed, completing onscreen forms, making rough hand sketches and layouts and otherwise keeping accurate maintenance records.
• Diagnosing and repairing hydraulic system components including cylinders, control, check and diverter valves; developing and building such systems as required for improved operation.
• Road testing heavy trucks and operating a variety of heavy construction equipment incidentally in the performance of mechanical repairs.
• Performing test operation, making final adjustments and lubricating repaired equipment.

Summary Description:

Under general direction supervision, performs various tasks relative to the repair and maintenance of vehicles and heavy/light equipment. Performs after-hours emergency response as required.

This is the journey-level class in the Mechanic series. In addition to the duties of the Mechanic Assistant, the Fleet Technician inspects, diagnoses and locates mechanical difficulties in City automobiles and a variety of diesel and gasoline powered maintenance and construction equipment. Maintains and repairs components and operating systems of vehicles and equipment. Incumbents perform independently, without technical supervisor and are responsible for maintaining and repairing high performance firefighting apparatus, emergency vehicles, vehicles, and equipment.

The Fleet Technician is a full journey-level class responsible for maintaining, repairing and servicing a wide variety of City owned and rental fleet. Some vehicles and/or equipment contain complex firefighting apparatus / equipment, generators, invertors, heating and cooling systems, plumbing fixtures and equipment, radios, FLIR, CAN communication networks, and pneumatic/hydraulic systems. Assignments vary, encompass a variety of tasks, seldom require detailed instructions, and require sound, independent judgement and initiative. Fleet Technicians are required to provide their own toolbox and hand tools.
