THE POSITIONS

The City of Livermore is currently accepting applications to fill one (1) Mechanic vacancy and one (1) Senior Mechanic vacancy in the Fleet Services Section of the Maintenance Division.

Mechanics at all levels perform maintenance and repair services on heavy/light City vehicles/equipment, such as fire trucks, automobiles, construction equipment, street sweepers, lawn mowers, stationary generators; and perform other duties as assigned.

The Mechanic is a journey level classification in the Mechanic series. The Mechanic performs a range of skilled tasks requiring journey level mechanical ability and aptitude. Work assignments are performed according to established rules and procedures.

The Senior Mechanic is an advanced journey and lead level position classification in the Mechanic series and may be distinguished from those in the Mechanic class by the broader range of responsibilities and leading a crew. Senior Mechanics provide lead direction and training to section staff.

 

MECHANIC: $6,973.05 – $8,434.12 monthly

SENIOR MECHANIC $7,570.27 – $9,160.03 monthly

TESTING & SELECTION PROCESS
Applications and supplemental questionnaires will be reviewed for completeness and content to determine the best qualified candidates. The best qualified candidates may be invited to participate in a performance test (Mechanic) or Qualifying Appraisal Board (QAB) interview (Senior Mechanic). The results of performance tests and QAB interviews will be used to establish the Eligible List. The Eligible List will be effective for one year and may be extended. This list may be used to fill current and future Mechanic or Senior Mechanic vacancies during the duration of the list.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Work periods and workdays are subject to change dependent upon the operational requirements of the City. Appointment to City employment is contingent upon passing a fingerprint criminal background check, DMV check, and pre-employment physical examination. At time of hire, proof of United States citizenship or authorization to work in the United States must be presented. The probationary period for this position is 12 months.

JOB DESCRIPTION: FLEET TECHNICIAN

JOB SUMMARY
Under general direction, performs routine servicing of SFD fleet vehicles and other mechanical equipment. Performs routine generator maintenance for District properties. Assists with annual fire pump testing. Updates all pertinent maintenance records of SFD vehicles.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general direction of the Fleet Services Manager.

None.

FLSA: Non-Exempt.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Fleet Services and Maintenance:
 Performs major and minor repairs and applies NFPA standards on all district apparatus and equipment, such as engine overhauls, major pump repairs, and hydraulic equipment repairs, to ensure they will perform under emergency conditions; applies EMS industry standards governing ambulance fleet design, maintenance, and repair.
 Services all district vehicles, fire pumps and their components, standby power supplies such as auxiliary generators, AC & DC electrical systems, as well as other complex fire apparatus, on a regularly scheduled basis.
 Performs routine vehicle inspections and repairs, including annual or recommended preventative maintenance (PM) intervals, and other general and PM work.
 Maintains communication with district personnel to ensure apparatus and equipment are properly cared for and maintained.
 Coordinates equipment repair work with outside vendors; monitors the delivery of outside fleet services and repairs; keeps electronic records of time, labor, and materials used on current platform; orders supplies and materials.
 Ensures a safe work environment for all shop and field repair activities.
 Maintains Automotive Service Excellence and Emergency Vehicle Technician certifications and training requirements as required.
 Maintains positive working relationships with internal and external customers.
 Implement procedures for the proper handling and preparation of materials prior to welding. This includes cutting, cleaning, and pre-fitting workpieces to ensure high-quality welds.
 Effectively execute the most appropriate welding techniques (MIG, TIG, Stick, etc.) for each repair and fabrication based on material type, thickness, and the specific requirements of the job.
 Provides staff training; works with employees to correct deficiencies.
 Reviews specifications for outsourcing of maintenance and repair.

What You’ll Do
• Perform skilled tasks in the mechanical repair and maintenance of diesel and gas-powered apparatus, vehicles, hydraulic systems for aerial ladders, and other like equipment.
• Accept assignments received in the form or oral or written communications.
• Determine the nature and extent of needed repairs, prioritize them, and perform necessary repairs.
• Inspect all department vehicles to ensure they meet proper safety protocols and are in standard working order.
• Maintain all vehicles to ensure safe working order for all employees.
• Perform regular servicing and preventative maintenance on all vehicles and apparatus including performing tune-ups, lube, oil, filter, Inspection, and chassis lubrication.
• Diagnose, service, maintain such things as: fire pumps, relief valves, and other control of plumbing equipment (proper certification required).
• Inspect, diagnose, and repair engines, power train components, transmissions, transfer cases, differentials, hydraulic and pneumatic brake systems, steering and suspension systems, and electrical systems.
• Perform welding and fabricating work when applicable.
• Operate all equipment and tools safely and efficiently.
• Perform routine shop maintenance and clean-up and dispose of hazardous materials according to established procedures.
• Keep records of work assignments for bookkeeping and tracking purposes.
• Potentially respond to unanticipated emergencies to make temporary and/or permanent repairs in the field.

Description
Under the direct supervision of the Shop Supervisor, the Fire Mechanic performs various skilled duties by performing minor and major repairs and maintaining all Fire Apparatuses, including utility, individual staff vehicles, and all departmental equipment. This includes but is not limited to, a complete range of preventative maintenance, and diagnosis of diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles and equipment, with the ability to adjust as required.

About the Role
This is a journey-level classification. An employee in this class performs skilled tasks in the mechanical repair and maintenance of diesel and gas-powered apparatus, vehicles, hydraulic systems for aerial ladders, and other like equipment. Assignments are received in the form of oral or written communications. The employee is expected to determine the nature and extent of needed repairs, prioritize them, and perform necessary repairs.

Essential Duties
INSPECTS: All department vehicles to ensure they meet proper safety protocols and are in standard working order.
SERVICE AND MAINTAIN: All District vehicles including but not limited to, fire engines, ambulances, utility trucks, trailers, aerial ladder truck, and passenger vehicles to ensure proper working order all while providing for the safety of the employee. Perform regular servicing and preventative maintenance on all District vehicles and apparatus performing tune-ups, lube, oil, filter, and chassis lubrication. The Fire Mechanic will also diagnose, service, maintain, and repair such things as; fire pumps, relief valves, and other control or plumbing equipment (proper certification required).
INSPECT, DIAGNOSE, AND REPAIR: All District vehicles including but not limited to, fire engines, ambulances, aerial ladder truck, passenger vehicles, utility trucks, trailers, power train components, transmissions, transfer cases, differentials, hydraulic and pneumatic brake systems with any related components, steering and suspension systems with any related components, and electrical circuits.
INSPECT, DIAGNOSE, REPAIR, AND INSTALL: Complex electrical systems, installation of emergency lighting, sirens, and communication equipment.
