MAY 29, 2021 – VIN LIST –  FSA 21S28 VIN LIST

Description

AFFECTED VEHICLES ARE BUILT WITH A STEERING GEAR BALL NUT RETAINER THAT MAY BE CRACKED. ADJUSTMENTS TO THE STEERING GEAR SUPPLIERS ASSEMBLY TOOLING ALLOWED INTERFERENCE WITH THE BALL NUT RETAINER DURING INSERTION OF A SNAP RING. THIS INTERFERENCE ALLOWED THE ASSEMBLY EQUIPMENT TO DAMAGE THE RETAINER.

Safety Risk

A BROKEN STEERING GEAR BALL NUT RETAINER CAN ALLOW BALLS IN THE BALL NUT ASSEMBLY TO DISPLACE AND WEDGE. CONTINUED STEERING WHEEL MOVEMENT CAN FURTHER WEDGE THE BALLS AND DISPLACE THE RETAINER, RESULTING IN INCREASED STEERING EFFORT. SHOULD THIS CONTINUE AND THE BALLS DO NOT TRANSITION BACK INTO THE RETURN GUIDES, THE BALL NUT MAY NOT BE ABLE TO ROTATE. AS A CONSEQUENCE, THE DRIVER MAY NOT BE ABLE TO ROTATE THE STEERING WHEEL WHILE DRIVING, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH

Remedy

OWNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AND INSTRUCTED TO NOT DRIVE THEIR VEHICLES. THEY WILL BE ASKED TO WORK WITH A FORD OR LINCOLN DEALER TO HAVE THE VEHICLES TOWED IN FOR SERVICE. DEALERS WILL REMOVE AND REPLACE THE STEERING GEAR FOLLOWING NORMAL WORKSHOP MANUAL PROCEDURES. THERE WILL BE NO CHARGE FOR THIS SERVICE.

At the risk of “piling on,” here is another article about COVID-19. There are many lessons learned from this worldwide pandemic. Some of these lessons will change our way of living in many areas.

It has certainly expanded the meaning of “saving our own” as we are at considerable risk of becoming the customer while serving our customers. No doubt this will accelerate emerging processes such as doctor’s appointments via telemedicine/telehealth. The fire service could emerge as an extension of urgent care agencies, whether it be going to the patient or the patient coming to the fire station.

PIERCE RECALLS MORE THAN 800 AERIALS

Pierce Manufacturing is recalling certain 2004-2018 Arrow XT, Dash, Enforcer, Impel, Quantum and Velocity firefighting aerial vehicles.

A potential 886 vehicles may be affected by this recall. The aerial devices may unexpectedly rotate to the right when the ladder is being extended. Through internal testing, Pierce traced the cause of this malfunction to its CommandZone II controllers.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Office of Defects received five consumer complaints and two other reports that alleged a defect in the aerial ladder control valves, which resulted in unattended movement of the aerial ladder platform.

The complaints and reports included allegations of uncontrolled movement resulting in the aerial ladder striking a pole, lowering onto a building that was on fire, and multiple instances of the ladder swinging full speed 20 to 30 feet while extending.

NHTSA also acknowledged an independent investigation after an aerial failure during a two-alarm fire in Boston last year.

In April 2018, the telescoping ladder on a 2005 Pierce fire truck buckled and collapsed onto a three-story building. The firefighter on the ladder was able to safely climb out of the ladder’s bucket onto the roof of the building, reported WCVB.

The recall began on February 28. Naturally Pierce plans to notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the aerial control module free of charge. Owners may contact Pierce customer service at 1-888-974-3723. Pierce’s number for this recall is 74B295.
