YOUR IMPACT

You’ll be responsible for:

  • Examining and locating mechanical defects in a wide variety of fire apparatus, vehicles and equipment.
  • Performing preventative maintenance according to an established schedule, including repair or replacement of various faulty parts, wheel bearings, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems and steering mechanisms.
  • Checking electrical systems, wheel alignment, tires, generators, distributors, lights, fire pump and accessories.
  • Repairing gas-powered and diesel engines, hydraulic fuel, ignition and electrical systems.
  • Using machine shop equipment; welding and machining techniques to construct, repair, and modify parts and equipment.
  • Performing basic in-cab and body repair work.
  • Installing electrical systems within fire station facilities.
  • Keeping records of time, materials, parts used and work performed.
  • Scheduling work in the absence of the supervisor.

ARE YOU QUALIFIED:
Education and/or Experience:
 
High School graduation or G.E.D. equivalent is required, including or supplemented by training in repair of motorized equipment; and two years of journey-level experience in the maintenance and repair of light to heavy gas and diesel-powered equipment or any combination of training and experience is required, including the repair, maintenance and servicing of fire equipment.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Knowledge of practices, techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in the diagnosis, repair and modification of a wide variety of technical equipment, including automobiles, light trucks, heavy equipment, and specialized types of fire apparatus, and their component systems; regulations, safety standards and Fire guidelines pertaining to maintenance and repair of fire equipment; current technology in repairing and diagnosing vehicles, equipment and their component systems; operation and repair characteristics of the entire range of city-owned light and heavy equipment; welding techniques and methods preventive maintenance practices and techniques.

Ability to inspect and correctly diagnose malfunctions in gas and diesel-powered equipment; use with skill the tools and test equipment associated with the automotive and heavy equipment trade; use gas and electric welding and cutting apparatus; perform technical repairs and adjustments within the time frames established; perform preventative maintenance and replacement functions; read and interpret manuals, schematics, plans, and specifications; prepare and maintain a variety of shop time keeping and repair records; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; understand and follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, management, vendors, and the general public.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:
 
Must have a valid California Class B driver’s license and acceptable driving record. Class B license must have tankers endorsement with no restrictions.

Possession of California Fire Mechanics Academy (CFMA) Level I Certification is desirable.
